Cabot´s Journeys...
John Cabot sailed on two journeys. Cabot´s first set sail in May of 1497. King Henry VII sent a letter to John Cabot and his son, granting them permission to go to find another route to Asia for trade. The routes to Asia through sea were very inefficient because they had to cross the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire charged very high taxes. So that route was not very efficient. Cabot proposed a second journey to King Henry VII, but only this time, he would reach Japan. He set set sail in 1498. But by 1499 Cabot was never heard from again.
John Cabot helped the European countries establish a shorter route between the Americas and Europe. Though the Treaty of Tordesillas divided the Americas between Spain and Portugal, the route discovered by John Cabot was much more useful for Spain, than it was for Portugal. Because of John Cabot, England conquered the thirteen colonies, and most of Canada. As a result of John Cabot´s journeys, Canada now crossed languages with the English so now Canada spoke English as well. |
